Skin afflicted by acne tends to be thick and coarse, with large follicular orifices (enlarged pores) and blocked pores (opened and closed blackheads). This type of skin may also have pustules with white or yellow-tinged centers, and it may be shiny. In most cases acne is the result of an internal malfunction that manifests as a symptom on the face, chest, and back. This type of skin is often characterized by scarring and dark or red spots that seem slow to heal. Use of acne medication or drying skin-care products may leave the skin very dehydrated or irritated.
