Oily skin is characterized by overabundant secretion of the sebaceous glands. Puberty and other hormonal imbalances, stress, antibiotics, and exposure to heat or excessive humidity cause the sebaceous glands produce more oil than is needed, and the skin may appear greasy or shiny. If incorrectly treated, this condition may give rise to other problems. Contrary to popular belief, oily skin can be sensitive, and it is often mishandled by excessive washing with harsh products designed to dry out the skin. Such products eliminate the oil on the surface and, by doing so, cause the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Often, chronically oily skin has enlarged, coarse pores and is prone to blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. The oiliness of the skin can change from day to day, depending on the sun, the wind, the time of the year, and the weather. People with oily skin are usually prone to acne.
